Sometimes when you're writing you might be having trouble--you can't "get the story to flow", and the story isn't good, you can't get any ideas-- I've found it helps me to change the characters in some cases. Such as change their names, their pasts, their personalities, their features, their home, their parents, their brothers and sisters--a complete makeover. But you might also just have a few flaws you aren't aware of in your character, so try any changes. You could just change a few things in your character and see if that fits you. Or, maybe you don't need to change your character. Maybe the story itself needs a different plot/storyline. So change the name of the story, change the characters in it, change what's happening. Instead of dragons soaring to help, a colony of dragons in deep trouble? A wolf pack living naturally, a wolf pack living underground with chains and powers? I think it helps. Reading a lot of books gives you ideas, and if you're doing nonfiction, read books by good nonfiction authors. I can recommend some good fiction books--the Fablehaven series, Warriors by Erin Hunter, Seekers by Erin Hunter, and soon Survivors by Erin Hunter, and Wolves of the Beyond by Kathryn Lasky, and Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky. Summer Camp Secrets by Katy Grant. And DEFINATELY Lord of the Rings, Part 1, 2 and 3 by J.R.R Tolkien!
You could draw random pictures, look at nature and human resources to get ideas. It works, for me at least! :DHope it works for you, too!
