"Kai, I'm going to the barn," Ashlyn called from her position by the door where she was donning her sneakers. She kept her boots at the stables so she wouldn't have to carry them with her, a practice that she'd gotten into years ago, before she left.
Kaiden, sitting in the dining room eating a bowl of cereal, rolled his eyes, although he couldn't help but chuckle. Ash was the only one who was allowed to call him that; he didn't bother arguing with her, because he knew that she'd just persist in using that pet name anyway. Ever since she was little she would call him that.
"Fine," he answered, raising his voice so she could hear him. "If you need anything, you know my cellphone number." He heard a rustle of movement and glanced up; she was standing in the entrance to the dining room, blinking at him with those big emerald eyes. There was a slight smirk playing on her features, and a strand of curly black hair framed her face.
"See you later." And she was gone as suddenly as she'd arrived. Kaiden just shook his head and continued eating.
