Just a story centered on my book I'm writing on Microsoft Word.... my entry for the story contest.
[glow=blue,2,300]Battle at the River [/glow]
Aelethe flicked her thick, flossy white tail, her paws urgently hitting the top of the thin grassy turf. Here and there bare rock jutted up from the green ground. She hurried as the night sky glittered overhead, the cold air rushing by her thin white-gray fur.
Aelethe bounded faster down the slope. She had just scaled a small rise and was rushing down the dip. A cliff bordered her left, and to her right thick, mossy green trees grew heavily in the Greywood Forest.
In a large dip in the ground ahead of her, bushes and twisted thorn trees marked the camp of the Lily Cliff Caeles, "little pack" of the Sunlight Pack. Snores and whispers ruffled the night as Aelethe drew closer.
Aelethe sprang into the camp. A loud snort; a hiss; and grumbling as a wolf heaved itself to its feet and padded sleepily to Aelethe's side.
"Aele?" said a sleepy voice of a male wolf. "Aelethe? What's wrong?"
It was "Aele's" mate, Eagle. Eagle was a handsome red wolf, with large brown streaks and gray ears. "Snowwhisper's been captured, Eagle!" Aelethe rushed in panic. "Him and me were investigating where the Storm Pack's been scented with their kills, and I turned around and he wasn't there!"
Eagle nodded briskly and turned quickly, vanishing into the caeles' lord slept. A few seconds later, Eagle returned, with the huge male lord with midnight black fur and piercing green eyes. His name was Midnight, but more properly adressed, "my lord." But Aelethe was panicked and in no mood for formalities. Midnight sat down, wrapping his tail around his huge black paws, fixing Aelethe with an intent green stare.
Aelethe took this as an opening. She paced intently, circling the lord, and started her story.
"I and Snowwhisper were out on the mission Crawn" (Crawn was the beta of the caeles) "gave us. It was where the Storm Pack had been scented with the prey's blood. I sniffed Lord Meric's scent and I turned to tell Snowwhisper, but he had vanished! What do we do, my lord?!!!!"
Midnight was on his feet as Aelethe stopped pacing and stared pleadingly at him with her light blue eyes, normally so soft and gentle but now filled with distress. Midnight's emerald gaze blazed with anger and worry. "We send out search patrols--immediately," he growled tersely. Midnight jumped up on the boulder he slept inside--a cleft he entered and slept in. On the boulder he announced meetings and things.
"Come to the boulder!" His howl cracked the air with tenseness. Soft woofs and growls and grumbling huffed from the warriors den, the apprentices', and the nursery. But eventually the elders, apprentices, warriors, and the healer, were lined up, facing the boulder while Aelethe and Eagle watched from the base of the rock.
"Snowwhisper is missing," he announced darkly. "He and Aelethe were investigatigating where the Storm Pack had been scented, when Aelethe turned and Snowwhisper was gone. We must find him! Crawn" the stocky, tall brindled wolf was in the crowd "organize four search parties. Send two search parties to the area where Snowwhisper vanished--"
"Hold it," shouted the scrawny, rude and nasty he-wolf named Jilgaw. He was russet with black ears and one gray paw, with yellow eyes. "Where'd Snowwhisper disappear? And how d'you know Snowwhisper's not gonna show up? Mebbe Aelethe's just making a fuss over nothing."
Aelethe jumped to her feet and spat furiously at Jilgaw. "Jilgaw," she hissed, "I looked for hours before I came back for help! Be quiet, you nasty wolf! And--"
"That's enough," interrupted Midnight, shooting an icy green glare at first Jilgaw, then at Aelethe. "Aelethe, tell them--tell us--where Snowwhisper disappeared." His ruff was thick as he surveyed the furious warriors below.
Aelethe calmed and delivered grumpily where: The Storm Pack border, 'obviously,' as she said. "Near the Crow Swamp."
Thorn, Twist, Jaeger, and Mossy were sent to the Crow Swamp, along with another patrol, Keri, Leopard, Raven, and Black. Jewel, Riverstone, Lilac, and Flame were ordered to go to the other edges, and Penny, Glitter, Spike, and Newt to beyond the swamp.
Aelethe could not be completely calmed. She kept insisting to go looking for Snowwhisper--he was her brother. Finally, Midnight, resigned to it, allowed Aelethe, Eagle, and another wolf named Larkspur to look for Snowwhisper.
Aelethe followed the glittering river sliding out of the Crow Swamp. The green waters slid smoothly along, with the occasional jostled by a spike of rock. Larkspur, a small, long-furred wolf with glittery white fur, a circle of blue around one eye and a black ear and flossy brown tail, followed, sniffing intently. Eagle padded after the anxious she-wolves, exasperated as he struggled to reassure Larkspur and Aelethe.
The scent trail of Snowwhisper led from the edge of the swamp to the side of the river. Bits of blood draggled on the path, making Aelethe even more scared for her brother. She jogged along the trial, worried to death.
The trail ended abruptly at an outcropping of black rock. Eagle nonchalantly sat and watched the she-wolves mill around the stone, trying to find something. "Well, we'll have to report to Lord Midnight now," he said calmly. Aelethe furiously turned, snarling, at her mate. "My brother's missing!" she said hysterically. "We must find him!" She turned and sniffed furiously. Eagle cringed to the earth guiltily.
"Anyway," said Larkspur determinedly, "let's cross the river. He might've jumped off the rock to cross it. Let's do the same..." and nodded, Eagle jumped on the rock and leapt from the outcrop across the river.
They crossed sucessfully and traveled beside the river on that side. Snowwhisper would not have left from the riverside, Aelethe concluded inwardly, and so led them on the banks of the river. After a few minutes, the scent picked up again and Aelethe followed fervently, while Eagle and Larkspur wondered how the scent had left the grass so long. It was past midnight, and Aelethe was fretting and anxious, exhausted but pushing to her limits.
Suddenly, the scent grew stronger. And the scent of Shadowice Pack wolves and Storm Pack wolves hit the wolves' nostrils, so they recoiled, eyes flashing.
"Graah!" A body slammed into Aelethe. Two other hefty wolves crashed into Larkspur and Eagle and pinned them down. A cackling voice announced, "Aelethe! Larkspur! Eagle! Surrender! You are captured, it is hopeless!"
A stocky figure moved into view. Dark russet, with brindled paws and black eyes, huge black wings unfolded from its body. Aelethe let out a strangled gulp. The wolf was known as Blacknike, the batlord of the skies. Feared and infamous, wolves dreaded his name.
Blacknike moved slightly and there was...Snowwhisper. Pinned under a monstrous gray wolf, Aelethe struggled to get to her brother. But Blacknike ripped a gash in her stomach and Aelethe squeaked in pain, falling limp. Eagle watched in horror as Blacknike stepped over them.
"Hah," he gloated. "You're mine. More minions," he crowed. Aelethe stared in shock and horror and fury as she realized the stocky wolves standing over them had glazed, fearful eyes and the faces of...her friends.
Quickly, Larkspur deduced that Blacknike had enough black magic to kidnap wolves and turn them into strong, brainless zombie wolves. That had happened to the good wolves here, that have been turned by dark magic, she concluded bitterly. Filled with sorrow, she stared into the face of her former mate, Jackal. His gaze was wierd and white, twisted in terror. His thin face looked strange on the stocky body he inhabited.
Suddenly, a whoosh of air and slam! Blacknike staggered. Two wolves pinned him. All bore Storm Pack scent. Another wolf ripped Eagle's captor off and pinned him, and three more wolves overpowered Larkspur's and Aelethe's guards. Another wolf jumped on Snowwhisper's captor, ripping and pinning. Blacknike snarled, turning to retaliate, but other wolves leapt on him and tore into him, pinning him. Eagle staggered up, and Larkspur followed, Aelethe softly whining in pain as she pushed up.
Aelethe stared in shock as three wolves, clearly superior to the others, swept in as night breezes would. "What--how--" she whispered, as a magnificent yellow wolf, with brown eyes surveyed her, Eagle, Snowwhisper, and Larkspur magnificently. "I am Pheonix," he said quietly, his tone rich and grand.
"My--my lord--" Larkspur bent to her knees, and Snowwhisper followed painfully, knees gashed, and Eagle and Aelethe bowed. Pheonix was the ruler of the entire two caeles of StormPack.
"I apologize that our scents are on your land," he told them. "We have been following traces of Blacknike for weeks. He has kidnapped many of our wolves--and, as it seems, used black magic on them," he added sadly, turned to gesture to the magic-twisted Storm Pack wolves. "Tell your ruler and your lord we are sorry. But now Blacknike will be vanquished."
Snowwhisper, long-furred and crystal white, with yellow eyes, stared up at the ruler's brown, earnest eyes. "Thank you so, so much, my lord," he whispered fervently. "We cannot thank you enough."
Two days later, Snowwhisper was rested, sitting with Larkspur and Eagle and Aelethe. Midnight rewarded them with gold medallions, with wolves carved on them bound in a necklace with thick stout stems. They went down in history, along with the Storm Pack wolves, for saving the packs from Blacknike.
And Blacknike was dead. Never to return.
