Just a little story for your enjoyment, as I'm not sure if I'm technically allowed to enter my own contest xD. Anyway, I wrote this last year, so it's not excellent, and it's pretty short compared to my usual "short" stories (my most recent one was 6,000 words. My fanfiction followers were ecstatic). This is about the fall of the original SkyPack; any of you in the SkyPack roleplay on Howrse will be able to appreciate this one. Just a warning, this is not at all related to the SkyPack roleplay in the Warriors forums.
Enjoy!
Azalea sat in the middle of the clearing. It was her night to guard while the other wolves slept in their dens, but she was so tired. The other wolves were all fast asleep. Her father, Spark, the Alpha Male, had been pushing every one of them to their limits. But even Cloud, the spunky Beta Female, had to admit that they were falling back, and they couldn't keep this up for much longer. SkyPack was currently locked in a generations-long war with the traitorous EarthPack, and the tide was not in their favor. Her head nodded.
Azalea heard a twig crack. She jumped and swore- she had fallen asleep! Her gaze was drawn to moving shadows at the edge of the camp clearing. Her usually sensitive nose instantly picked up the scent of enemy wolves.
“Atta-” She was cut off mid-screech. Azalea suddenly found herself pinned to the ground, her muzzle shoved in the dirt. While she scrabbled to get away, the other wolves were awakening and howling, rushing to defend their camp. She heard the nursing mothers cry out as their pups were stolen from them. The wolf on her back was pummeling her, causing long, shallow scratches. Azalea glanced up, her eyes streaming, to see Spark race out of his den and stop in horror when he saw the full-out attack EarthPack had launched on them. She surged upward, knocking her attacker away and pausing to gaze around the clearing, horror-struck. She heard a scream of grief and defiance; turning, she saw her strong half-brother Thunder fighting two wolves beside a body, which she recognized to be Emerald, Thunder's mate. Thunder was quickly overtaken by the wolves and knocked to the ground.
“No!” Azalea cried, trying to get over to them, but she was intercepted by a flaming she-wolf, glaring at her in hate. Azalea dodged the flame-balls shot at her by the she-wolf. She leaped into the air, snapping out her pink and white wings. She summoned her own power and doused the flaming wolf in water, causing the attacker to go down screaming.
Azalea dove down on top of an EarthPack wolf, but she knew the battle was already lost- her dead packmates were scattered about the clearing, and Spark and his mate Princess were fighting five wolves together. Cloud was beside her dead mate, fighting and sobbing. The wolves quickly took Cloud down as well. Azalea cried out, lifting back into the air. She dove down again to help her parents, while Thunder worked his way over to help.
“Go!” cried Spark to them. “Get out of here, both of you, go find somewhere safe!”
“No, Father!” Thunder snarled, his fur bristling. “We'll help you.”
“Go,” Princess insisted, her eyes sparkling with tears. “This battle is lost. Go hide. Rebuild the Pack and remember SkyPack's saga.”
“We must go, Thunder,” Azalea said gravely, her own eyes wet. She licked her parents' ears and stepped away as more EarthPack wolves converged on them. Thunder, crying now, bid his parents farewell. He and Azalea rose into the air together. Two more SkyPack wolves flew up to join them, both injured- Rose and Phoenix. The rest of the pack was dead.
“We will come with you,” Rose said quietly, her voice broken. Azalea nodded. They all watched grimly as the EarthPack wolves overwhelmed their parents.
“Let's go,” Azalea said abruptly, turning away, unable to watch.
“We love you,” Thunder said softly, watching for another minute before turning and following Azalea.
“And so stands SkyPack,” Azalea sighed awhile later as they flew through the sky.
“And EarthPack,” Thunder added, suddenly excited. He point down with his paw. They paused in midair, finding themselves gazing down at the mostly empty EarthPack camp. “Wait here.” He dove down, turning invisible as he went.
“Thunder, get back here!” hissed Azalea, but she didn't dare speaking any louder this close to enemy territory. She and the others waited agitatedly until she heard the air rustling beside her and her brother became visible again, with something dangling from his mouth....
“You stole a pup!” gasped Azalea, her eyes widening.
“Not just any pup. Shadow's pup,” said Thunder proudly, referring to EarthPack's leader.
“Well, let's get him out of here,” sighed Azalea, resigned. “At least he's asleep.” Thunder gave her the pup, and they flew on to the north, toward the mountains.
Several hours later, they landed in a clearing. The remaining SkyPack wolves fortified it with their magic, assuring that they couldn't be found. They sat and gazed at the pup while it slept.
“His name will be Shadefur,” Thunder decided after a moment, his expression mournful.
“And we will be the beginning of the new SkyPack!” declared Azalea, straightening suddenly. Her pelt crackled with lightning, and there was unveiled determination in her eyes. Thunder dipped his head to her, a new respect in his gaze. Rose and Phoenix followed his lead- even little Shadefur woke up to stare.
“And you will be our leader,” Thunder murmured. Surprise flickered through the stolid she-wolf's gaze before she closed her eyes and nodded acceptance.
“I will lead you proudly.” Azalea's voice trembled with the knowledge of her new responsibility and the acknowledgment of a shed past.
And so was the story of SkyPack's downfall and Azalea's rise to power.
Enjoy!
